What the heck is a toner anyway?

A toner, a gloss, a glaze, it’s all the same thing just different words. If you’ve ever received a professional hair color service you have most likely have heard at least one of these terms.

Aveda’s Demi Line Capabality

As a stylist myself, I have a moral code I follow, especially if I am your colorist. If we are are making you a little brighter or doing a total transformation from a dark color to blonde, a toner is an absolute must.

Let me give you a little color theory: When we put lightener on the hair, it lifts to an unflattering red, orange, banana yellow, and everything in between. This is where the toner comes into play. A toner neutralizes unwanted tone and adds the tone we WANT to see.

Now, do not get it twisted, toners are not just applied when going lighter, it could be utilized when you are going darker!  Artificial hair color is just that.. artificial. It tends to fade with washes, heat, products, and even our environment. If you are a person who likes to a solid color and comes in for your regular 4-6 week touchup, sometimes you are going to need to refresh the ends of your hair. Personally, I rather use a toner as it is less compromising and works as an amazing shine treatment in comparison to overlapping permanent color that could eventually cause dehydration.

It can even be used as a fashion color! Lavender purple, fire red, sapphire blue, it is truly limitless!

So.. WHAT IS IT? It normally, a demi permanent hair color that just penetrates the outermost layer of the hair strand, the cuticle. This being said, it is actually not damaging when doing it every couple of weeks. Depending on the brand, it can be very hydrating.

At C’zar Salon and Spa, we use Aveda, which is vegan and naturally derived. Our demi line contains a multitude of conditioning agents that leaves your hair softer and shinier: kukui, sunflower, castor and jojoba oils. These certified organic plant oils helps to improve the condition of damaged hair and provide radiant shine.  It lasts up to 30 washes or around 24 weeks.  The longevity all depends on what you are doing at home.  How often you shampoo your hair, whether you use scorching water or cool water, what products you use, if you are using heat, and your environment (ex. Do you spend a lot of time outside or in the sun? Yeah, that is contributing too!)

Do your absolute best to trust your stylist when they tell you you are in need of one!  If something is not sitting right, if you have questions, please do not hesitate to ask questions and pick your stylist’s brain.  The more you know, the better for you and your hair!
